Soon two additional ranks will be added to our Knights of the Altar program. These two ranks are based on the original ranks that were part of the Knights of the Altar program that was developed in 1939. The Knights of the Altar program of Mater Dei Catholic Parish have adapted and will introduce these new ranks within the next two months as one of our Knights will be promoted to Knight Commander and then to Master Knight. In the future, all promotions will be done on Christ the King Sunday with only up to six Knights being promoted to Knight Commander and only up to three Knight Commanders being promoted to Master Knights. The Master Knight is the highest rank that requires a demonstration of an expertise at serving at the Altar. Please stay tuned from more information on this promotion ceremony and an updated handbook to be published describing these new ranks.
In addition, Knights of the Altar, at any rank who has served for at least four [4] years at the Lord’s Altar will be eligible to become a “Knight of Honor”. This is not a rank, but an acknowledgement of their service at the Lord’s Altar. This honor will be given at the time of the Knight’s graduation from high school. We will be honoring several of our Knights on May 11 at the 10:30 am Mass as they prepare to graduate from high school.
In short, the ranks are:
- RECRUIT
- APPRENTICE
- KNIGHT
- KNIGHT COMMANDER
- MASTER KNIGHT
Preparation for promotions to the next rank will take place each fall, with promotions done on Christ the King Sunday. Altar Servers will only be able to advance one rank per year with most Altar Servers in the ranks of Recruit, Apprentice, and Knight. Only up to six [6] Knight Commanders and up to three [3] Master Knights will serve at any given time.
Again, more information will be posted when the updated KOA Handbook is published on this webpage.
Remember: “Serving the Lord is our privilege.”
